Author co-citation analysis (ACA) has been widely used for identifying the subject disciplines of authors. Citations can reveal the explicit relationship between authors as well as their subject research fields. However, previous studies have seldom considered citation contents that convey useful implicit information on the authors or the influence of the links between the authors' subject fields by taking citation locations into account. This study aims to reveal the implicit relationship in the authors' subject disciplines by considering both citation contents and proximity. To this end, the researchers propose a new ACA method, called content- and proximity-based author co-citation analysis (CPACA). For the study, we extracted citation sentences and locations from full-text articles in the oncology field. The top 15 journals on oncology in Journal Citation Reports were selected, and 6,360 full-text articles from PubMed Central were collected. The results show that the proposed method enables the identification of distinct sub-fields of authors to represent authors' subject relatedness. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In citation network analysis, complex behavior is reduced to a simple edge, namely, node A cites node B. The implicit assumption is that A is giving credit to, or acknowledging, B. It is also the case that the contributions of all citations are treated equally, even though some citations appear multiply in a text and others appear only once. In this study, we apply text-mining algorithms to a relatively large dataset (866 information science articles containing 32,496 bibliographic references) to demonstrate the differential contributions made by references. We (1) look at the placement of citations across the different sections of a journal article, and (2) identify highly cited works using two different counting methods (CountOne and CountX). We find that (1) the most highly cited works appear in the Introduction and Literature Review sections of citing papers, and (2) the citation rankings produced by CountOne and CountX differ. That is to say, counting the number of times a bibliographic reference is cited in a paper rather than treating all references the same no matter how many times they are invoked in the citing article reveals the differential contributions made by the cited works to the citing paper.

Purpose-Previous commonly used author co-citation analysis (ACA) methods have limited the ability to deal with accidental co-citation in constructing a raw co-citation matrix. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to propose a new method, called author tri-citation analysis (ATA), to better map knowledge domains and depict scientific intellectual structures. Design/methodology/approach-Different from the previous method of using ACA that captures author co-citation relationships, the ATA method seeks tri-citation relationships among authors. Compared with ACA, ATA can ignore some accidental co-citation relationships between authors and can improve the accuracy of mapping knowledge domains. Findings-Although ATA does not mine more sub-fields than ACA does, the results of the empirical studies show that ATA, the newly proposed method, performs better in knowledge domain maps based on publications in the field of computer science. Research limitations/implications-The definition of ATA in this article is simple and still insufficiently informative. Many other pieces of information can be involved; for example, all authors' information, authors' sequence in the author list, reference published time and similar. These can be enhanced in future studies. Practical implications-This research will enrich the methods of mapping knowledge domains due to its new perspective. Social implications-Knowledge domain mapping is important to understand a discipline, and this research provides more potentialmethods for this, which benefits the performance of the maps. Originality/value-ATA can provide a methodological awareness for mapping knowledge domains. This value lies in not only a tri-citation perspective, but also author bibliographic tripling and author tri-operation perspectives ("tri-" perspectives).

Author co-citation analysis (ACA) has long been used as an effective method for identifying the intellectual structure of a research domain, but it relies on simple co-citation counting, which does not take the citation content into consideration. The present study proposes a new method for measuring the similarity between co-cited authors by considering author's citation content. We collected the full-text journal articles in the information science domain and extracted the citing sentences to calculate their similarity distances. We compared our method with traditional ACA and found out that our approach, while displaying a similar intellectual structure for the information science domain as the other baseline methods, also provides more details about the sub-disciplines in the domain than with traditional ACA.

The primary purpose of academic citation, at least in Management Studies, is citation analysis. So much hangs on citation analysis as an indicator of academic performance - careers, funding, institutional survival - that papers are written as platforms for citation rather than to be read. To satisfy the requirements of referees, editors, and publishers, a paper must be, above all else, citable. This paper investigates the citation practices of some of the top authors of some of the top papers in some of the top journals of Management Studies. It finds citation by an elite of an elite for an elite. This is generally seen as evidence of the disciplinary strength of Management Studies. We interpret the evidence differently; we see convergence on papers that are citable. We consider what makes a paper citable. Most important of all is that the paper is cited by others.

OBJECTIVE. The number of citations an article receives after its publication reflects its impact in the scientific community. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize the 100 top-cited articles published in radiology journals. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The top-cited articles published in 12 radiology journals were identified using the database of Science Citation Index Expanded (1945-2012). The 100 top-cited articles were selected and analyzed with regard to the number of citations, year of publication, publishing journal, authorship, institution and country of origin, type of article, radiologic subspecialty, main topic, and radiologic technique. RESULTS. The 100 top-cited articles were published in eight radiology journals, led by Radiology (n = 67) and followed by the American Journal of Roentgenology (n = 11). These articles were published between 1939 and 2006 with a mean of 664.3 citations per article (range, 371-6931). Seventy-eight articles were published after 1979, 57 originated from the United States, and 69 were original articles. The most common subspecialties of study were interventional radiology (n = 19), neuroradiology (n = 15), and breast imaging (n = 11). The main topics of articles were radiofrequency ablation of hepatic tumors (n = 9), followed by receiver operating characteristic curves (n = 6). CONCLUSION. Our study presents a detailed list and analysis of the 100 top-cited articles published in radiology journals, which provides insight into historical developments in the field of radiology.

Publications of the faculty of the University of Mississippi's School of Business were examined for a citation analysis. The following data were collected: journals cited, which publishers' journals were cited, age of the citations, and the Library of Congress classification range cited. The results were analyzed by the business school as a whole and by the four major departments in the college: Finance, Management, Management Information Systems/Production Operations Management, and Marketing. The study was undertaken to gain a better understanding of the local faculty researchers' needs, to examine how the library supports their needs, and to compare the local results with the metaresearch focused on specific subject or journal.
